1.0 INTRODUCTION
The East Africa kidney Institute was launched on October, 2014 as a Center of Excellence after a senate approval. The Institute was to address the burden of chronic kidney and urological diseases that are emerging as a major global health problem with heavy morbidity and mortality with its associated social and economic burden. They are the 12 Th cause of death and 17th course of disability. East and central Africa region is experiencing a great need for the scientific base knowledge and skills for the practice of urology and nephrology. The East Africa states through the Africa Development Bank agreed to set up the East Africa kidney institute
As a regional center of excellence it was mandated to build capacity in research training, clinical and preventive services in urology and nephrology for both faculty and service providers. The University of Nairobi and Kenyatta National Hospital serve as lead institutions.

- To train high calibre renal health-care professionals
- To offer renal health-related services to the community
- To conduct research in the specific thematic areas of Urology, Nephrology, Nursing and Nutrition
- To offer consultancy services
- To participate in renal health policy formulation
5.0 COURSES APPROVED AT THE INSTITUTE
The Institute offers various courses to build capacity in renal healthcare these are:-
5.1 Senate Approved Courses:-

5.2 College Academic Board Approved Courses:-
These are short skill based 12-week short courses to build capacity for staff working in renal clinics in public and the private sector.

- Preceptorship in renal pharmacy practice
- Preceptorship in Dialysis Access
- Preceptorship in renal laboratory Science
- Preceptorship in for Physicians and Medical Officers

6.0 Achievements
Since its Inception the Institute has had various achievements these are:-
- It has trained various qualified professionals in the following programs
- EAKI has trained 5 batches of Renal Preceptorship students:
- Batch 1: June to August 2016 -thirty seven health workers from Machakos, Bomet and Nyamira
- Batch II: September 2016 to December 2016 – 38 students from Kericho, Kirinyaga, Kisumu, Makueni, Kitui and Kiambu counties.
- Batch III: April to June 2017 thirty one health workers from Tharaka Nithi, Migori, Vihiga and Kajiado, West Pokot, Isiolo counties.
- Batch IV. 34 health workers. Twenty nine health from six counties Laikipia, Meru,Turkana, Kilifi, Muranga, Kajiado,Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo Marakwet, two from Kenyatta National Hospital and 3 from private hospitals.
- Batch V: July to October 2018 forty students. From Nyandarua, Tana-river, Siaya, Wajir, Mandera, Busia, Kiambu, Lamu, Kitui, Nakuru and Marsabit counties. 2 were private hospitals.
- Diploma in Renal Nursing
- January – December 2017 – 21 students graduated. 17 from the county hospitals and sponsored by MOH/EAKIP, 4 from private hospitals.
- January – December 2018 – 36 students admitted 32 graduated, 2 to sit supplementary examinations, 2 to repeat the year. 23 students were sponsored by MOH/EAKIP, 13 were from private hospitals.
- January 2019 Intake Registered 40 students for the Diploma in Renal Nursing:-
- Fellowship in Nephrology
- 2016/2017 admitted 8 students. 6 were sponsored by MOH/EAKIP and 2 were from private hospitals. They are now in part II of their study.
- Fellowship in Paediatric Nephrology
- 2018/2019 admitted 4 students
- Master of Science in Renal Nursing
- September 2018 intake – admitted 5 students.
- 300 health workers completed have been trained by EAKI
